The best agency coaches worldwide: 23 names grouped by growth, positioning, sales, finance, operations and community, by Chris Out

Short answer: there are twenty-three worth knowing, from the US, the UK, Europe, Australia and South Africa, and they fix very different things. This list groups them by what they work on: growth, positioning, sales, finance, operations and community. For each one it says who they are best for and what they cost where that is public.

I am on it myself. I coach founders of agencies with 2 to 10 people on Untouched Revenue, the revenue your company delivers without you in the delivery. That is one lens. If you are not that founder, one of the others below fits better, and each entry says who it is for. Coaches in the Netherlands and Belgium have their own list.

·

Online, regularly in the Netherlands

·

Spain

Chris founded RockBoost in 2014 and grew it from 10 to 85 people. It was ranked number 1 digital marketing agency in the Netherlands by Emerce 100 in 2020 and number 1 in the Fonk 50 in 2019, and won Golden Dutch Interactive Awards for E-commerce in 2018 and Branding in 2019. He sold his shares in the summer of 2020. Since then he has done 2,000+ private sessions with agency founders, written Structuring for Extreme Revenue Growth, the number one best-selling English management book on Managementboek.nl, and spoken on stages across Europe for rooms of 20 to 800 people. He lives in Spain, coaches online, and comes to the Netherlands regularly for in-person sessions.

He coaches on one number: Untouched Revenue, the revenue your agency delivers without you in the delivery. Every engagement starts with a free 45-minute Diagnosis that puts your U-level on the ladder and names the one meter that keeps it there: client happiness, autonomy, leads or margin per client. Not for you if you want a sales system bolted onto a company that still runs through the founder. Best for founders who are done compensating and want to redesign the system.

He is also the most direct coach on this list. Irene Krommendijk, managing director of Yonego: “He turns grey areas back into black and white. He works from a blueprint for success, so we cut straight to the core every time.”

Who they coach

Founders of agencies with 2 to 10 people, wherever they are based

Format

Online: Diagnosis (free, 45 min), The Edge (half-day), C.A.L.M. Sprint, C.A.L.M. Scale, C.A.L.M. Standard; in-person days in the Netherlands on a regular basis

Founders who want revenue that runs without them, and a coach who has built and sold an agency himself

The Bureau

The Bureau

·

International

The Bureau, formerly Bureau of Digital, is a community for leaders of digital and creative agencies: member chats, interest groups and yearly events.

It breaks one of the tests: membership is open to creative leaders in general, so owners sit next to creative directors and account managers. It is on the list because agency owners use it for one thing: peers who run the same kind of company. Best for owners who want peers rather than a coach.

How this list was made

Every entry had to meet three tests. The coach names agency owners as a core audience on their own site. The offer is coaching or advisory for the owner. And the person or company is traceable: a website and a track record we could check. Four entries break one of these tests and say so in their own text. They are on the list because agencies use them for one specific problem.

Prices and results are taken from each coach’s own site and are not independently verified. Prices are in the coach’s own currency. Where a coach runs or ran an agency, that is stated as background. General business coaches, coaches who teach small companies to do their own marketing, and coaches whose site showed no sign of activity in the last two years are left out. Coaches in the Netherlands and Belgium are on a separate list. Last check of every entry: see the date at the top.

Missing someone? Mail chris@chrisout.com with a link. Entries are added when they pass the three tests.

How to choose

Start with the problem. If the margin is leaking, you want someone who reads a P&L. If sales depend on you, you want positioning and pipeline. If the company stops when you stop, you want someone who works on the founder and the system at the same time. Then check market and language: a coach who knows how agencies sell in Germany or France is worth more there than a bigger name from another market. Then ask one question in the intake: how much revenue does your client’s company deliver without the founder? A coach who cannot answer that for their own clients is selling hours.

Frequently asked questions

What does an agency coach cost?

Public prices on this list run from £389 per month for a peer mastermind, via $2,495 for an online pricing workshop, €3,000 for a half-day roadmap session and $4,999 for a profit assessment, up to €72,000 per year for a weekly founder programme. Ongoing finance support starts at $1,499 per month. Most coaches on this list do not publish prices.

What is the difference between an agency coach and a business coach?

A business coach works on the owner and the company in general. An agency coach has run or advised agencies and knows the agency-specific problems: utilisation, scope creep, founder-led sales, margin on hours and projects, and client dependency. The list only includes people with that agency focus, plus four entries that say why they are here anyway.

Do I need a coach from my own country?

Not for the coaching itself: nearly everyone on this list works online. Market and language matter more. German-speaking agencies have Alexander Heeg and Max Winterhoff, French-speaking studios have BetterFounder, and agencies in the Netherlands and Belgium have their own list. Pick on fit with your problem and your stage first.

What is the difference between a coach, a mastermind and a community?

A coach works on your agency with you, one to one. A mastermind puts you in a room of owners with a facilitator, on a fixed rhythm. A community gives you peers and content, without anyone owning your outcome. Many owners combine one coach with one peer group.

Why is Chris Out on his own list?

Because leaving the author off would be stranger than putting him on. The entry is written in the same format as the others and says who he is not for. The list is grouped by what each coach works on. Within a group the order is not a ranking.
